The Impossible Dream
The 1% blog explores themes of hope, wellness and discovery in the context of MND / ALS.
For those seeking hope in the world of MND / ALS, allies can seem few and far between. In the wake of my diagnosis, I began writing about my experiences as a way of processing and making sense of what I was going through. Gradually, I realised my writing was turning into a book but I was hesitant to publish it. Who was I to put my opinions out there? I’m just a photographer from a corner of Scotland - not a researcher, not a doctor, not a scientist.
As I was putting the finishing touches to the book, I discovered Aaron Lazar - a Broadway performer, film and television actor who was recently diagnosed with ALS. Aaron's thoughts echoed so many of my own, and he used his platform and talents beautifully, to communicate a message of hope around the diagnosis. Knowing I'd found another ally who refused to accept the unacceptable was so uplifting.
Aaron has created a speaking platform to raise awareness for ALS and advocate for a better patient experience. His insights into the importance of a positive mindset, living in the present moment, and creating a purpose-driven life are motivational and emotive. He rightly points out that there have been over 60 documented ALS reversals - something that should give us all hope.
Aaron recently released a Grammy-nominated album of duets with an array of Tony-winning Broadway stars including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Sting and Josh Groban. The album features an ensemble version of The Impossible Dream, a song that has been a through-line in Aaron’s life, from his origins as a stage performer to his current diagnosis. The lyrics, his vocal and the context combine to spine-tingling effect.
Galvanised by Aaron's example, I decided to press-on, finish my book and add my voice to the conversation. I believe this book will open the doors its meant to and find its way into the hands of the right people. When it does, I’ll be passing a torch of hope to them, the way it was passed to me.
I’m grateful for Aaron Lazar. An ally and someone who can inspire us, as the song says, “to dream the impossible dream, to fight the unbeatable foe, to bear with unbearable sorrow, and to run where the brave dare not go.”
